Brief: Design an en-suite to make better use of the available space. Our clients visited our showroom in Uphall near Livingston looking for something special for their new en-suite. They wanted to change the layout of their bedroom, dressing area and en-suite to make better use of the space they had available. The challenge with the en-suite was not to compromise the other areas, but still fit in all the items on the clients’ wish list. The main criteria on the brief were for the room to feel modern with two basins, two towel warmers and a level access walk-in shower with a spa-like shower system. Their preference was for clean lines, bold furniture and for the room to work well practically as well as visually. In line with the clients wishes we re-formed the room to take into account the space necessary for their dressing-room wardrobes and bedroom area. We then created a thicker wall cavity at the back of the shower in order to include the long alcove with ambient lighting. Focusing on the modern and clean lines aspect we included a level access, wet floor with a linear drain and a fixed glass panel which would be recessed into the wall, floor and ceiling so no profiles could be seen. This meant lowering the ceiling area over the shower which also allowed us to recess the fixed-head rain shower. A small, fixed-head shower was fitted on the side wall which would give them the high pressure shower along with removable hand-shower. When it came to the sink, we installed a double basin unit in solid wood with a solid surface worktop which holds the two basins. Wall-mounted taps with minimal back plates tie in with the shapes of the other brassware in the room. Using the same colour of tiles throughout, but changing the texture make the space feel larger. A large mirror with wall lights was selected to finish off the space and helps to bounce the light around the room. As their house can be cold, our clients were keen to have two radiators in the room - one near the shower and one to dry the hand towels. The larger of the two was installed with an electric element for drying their large towels when needed. Our clients love their new en-suite and said that they couldn’t believe they could have a room like this in their own home – and on budget.
