Worktops - Granite Buyers’ Guide

As a German kitchen specialist that works with only the finest kitchen designers, Ekco knows all about the importance of finding the right kitchen worktops for your premium kitchens. One option is granite – and so here it offers its granite kitchen worktops buyers’ guide.

Why choose granite kitchen worktops?

Granite kitchen countertops have a timeless, classic look and black granite has proven to be a vastly popular choice for modern kitchens. If it is natural it will not have a uniform pattern – and the appearance can vary widely between the slabs. It is crystalline in structure and may contain natural fissures that appear to be cracks – however, they are not structural defects and will not hamper its durability.

What types of granite kitchen worktops are available?

Generally you can choose between granite kitchen worksurfaces based on the quality of the grade:

  • Premium grade: The highest quality form of granite kitchen worktops – it should have no visible defects, should be naturally sealed and highly polished. There should also be even distribution of the natural fleck within the stone and it should have a desirable pattern.
  • First choice: Similar to premium grade it should have a highly polished finish with flawless stone that is free from defects.
  • Commercial: This is a poorer grade quality of granite that is usually used in large commercial projects in a bid to control costs. It usually has visible defects and may have gone through several dying processes to improve its looks.

To test a granite kitchen countertop, take a clean white cloth with lemon juice and apply it to the surface of the granite. If there is any residue on the top then it is likely to have been dyed.
